Disable performance counters

Windows XP and 2000 have a performance monitoring utility that can monitor your PC's performance. This utility uses information that is stored via background processes that continually gather information. The background processes use up valuable system resources and usually are not required for the average user.

To disable the counters, download the Extensible Performance Counter List application from Microsoft here.

After installation has completed, run Exctrlst.exe, this file is located in C:\Program Files\Resource Kit\.

The program will list each counter in box labeled "Extensible Performance Counters:".

To disable a counter you will have to click on it in the list, and uncheck the box labeled "Performance Counters Enabled".

You will need to select and uncheck the box, for each and every counter you would like to disable. Close the application when you are finished.
To revert the settings you have done, just reopen the program and re-check the box for each counter you would like to enable.
